Abstract

Soliton-based optical communication systems are attracting considerable attention due to their potential of increasing significantly the capacity of long-haul lightwave systems.1 Because of fiber loss, one must insert amplifiers periodically along the link and make use of the concept of average soliton. However, the conditions of applicability of this average-soliton regime limit the bit rates to 10-20 Gbit/s.
