For many years now, researchers have been attempting to develop a new laser system with a different wavelength for a variety of applications. The frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser with 532 nm wavelength has been used in medical, industrial and scientific fields. For some applications, the intracavity Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) of Nd:YAG laser resonator is required in order to generate a very high average power of 532 nm green laser. Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (KTP) has been used as the second harmonic crystal because it has a very high effective nonlinear coefficient for Type-II phase.1 On the other hand, KTP has some disadvantages for high power intracavity SHG applications: (1) as a result of its low laser damage threshold, the “gray track” and “bum out” of KTP crystals are common problems for this application, (2) the smaller acceptance angle limits the optical intensity on the crystal and makes the system very sensitive to misalignment, (3) the larger walk-off angle directly impacts the quality of the laser mode and limits some of the applications.
