SNR improvement of four-wave mixing wavelength shifting by noise prefiltering in a semiconductor optical amplifier

Abstract

Wavelength shifting may play an important role in future wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) optical networks by allowing for dynamic routing and wavelength reuse. In order to enable the most flexible and upgradable WDM network, a modulation-format-transparent wavelength shifter is highly desirable. In addition to transmitting digital baseband signals, multiple subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) channels may also be transmitted on a given wavelength supporting either analog channels and/or subcarrier-based routing information.
