Abstract
The use of variable reflectivity (VR) mirrors as output couplers in unstable laser resonators is now widely accepted for reducing the detrimental effects of edge diffraction and producing a large fundamental mode. Several analytical methods within the paraxial diffraction theory have been used for obtaining the transverse electromagnetic modes of an optical resonator with Gaussian apertures or mirrors.1
