Abstract
Ytterbium doped lasers have received a great deal of interest because of low heat generation, simple electronic structure, and broad absorption and emission bandwidths. Efficient laser performance has been demonstrated in Yb:YAG1 There is also much attention to Yb3+ in glass host materials especially because the Yb:glass spectra is much smoother compared to Yb:YAG and thus of particular interest for ultrashort pulse generation.2,3
