Optical absolute distance measurement using a trapezoidally modulated laser diode

Abstract

We demonstrate a new type of two-wavelength interferometer for absolute distance measurement without phase ambiguity. For signal processing, we combine the advantages of triangular- and squaremodulation techniques. The experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. A single-mode laser diode (HLP1400, λ = 821.6 nm) operating at 75 mA and 20 ± 0.01 °C was employed. It was modulated with a trapezoidal current waveform.
