A laser-diode-driven, three-color, solid-state 3-D display

Abstract

We demonstrate a solid-state three-dimensional volumetric display, with three wavelength-addressable colors, that is driven entirely with commercially available laser diodes. The display medium is a composite structure consisting of alternating RGB layers of low-phonon bulk halide glass. Each layer has been optimized in terms of host composition and dopant concentration to produce high pixel brightness in a specific dopant ion. The individual red, green, and blue colored pixels are produced by different rare-earth dopants, each of which is capable of undergoing discrete two-step, two-frequency upconversion. Figure 1 illustrates the composite structure of the device along with the scanning scheme employed to address the individual colors.
