Abstract
To obtain laser pulses with the shortest duration, compression techniques following self-phase modulation are commonly used. In this way, pulses as short as 6 fs have been obtained by spectral broadening 25-fs pulses from a mode-locked dye laser into a single-mode fiber followed by compression into suitable phase-dispersive elements.1 The use of single-mode fibers is however limited to low energy pulses (nanojoule range) due to material damage and higher-order nonlinearities.
