Abstract
A type of local photorefractive effect, based on the phenomenon of persistent photoconductivity (PPC), shows promise for optical data storage and holographic applications.1 PPC itself, which is observed in certain doped compound semiconductors, has been known for many years.2 In this effect, bistable deep traps known as DX centers are optically ionized producing a large increase in carrier density, which persists for long times at low temperatures (years in liquid nitrogen) due to an energy barrier preventing immediate electron recapture.
