Abstract
The results of two-tone frequency-modulated (FM) laser light scattered off a target to look at atmospheric absorptions are presented. The results are a first-time demonstration of the two-tone FM measuring technique used for monostatic (single-ended) applications involving diffusely scattering targets. Because two-tone FM can reach quantum-limited detection, it presents a significant improvement in signal-to-noise when compared to other monostatic measuring techniques while allowing relatively slow detection electronics. Applications that could benefit from increased sensitivity include remote sensing and process control where a single-ended measurement is necessary.
