Abstract

Nonlinear frequency conversion in semiconductor optical waveguides is an attractive approach to optical processing and to the realization of compact sources at still unreached wavelengths, Large second-order nonlinear coefficients of semiconductors, the possibility of integration with semiconductor lasers, and excellent control and quality of structures make semiconductors potentially well suited to frequency conversion devices. Recently, we have proposed1 the use of the huge artificial birefringence2 present in selectively oxidized3 GaAs/AIAs multilayers to achieve birefringence phase matching.
