Abstract

The fact that better receiver sensitivities can be achieved when data encoding in done using pulses muda shorter than the bit period was recognized by Personkk,1 but never con-· firmed experimentally. The demonstration of this effect requires a high “on/off’ extinction ratio at the transmitter, which is most easily achieved with a modelo eked laser.
