Abstract

Rare-earth-doped low phonon materials have shown themselves to be good candidates for IR lasers, amplifiers, and sources, baser action at 5.2 and 7.2 μn has been demonstrated in Pr:LaCl3 crystals1,2 and fluoride glass fibers are currently being developed for 1.3 micron telecom amplifiers.3
