Abstract

There has been a rapid progress recently in the development of coherent soft x-ray sources based on x-ray laser schemes,1 as well as harmonic upconversion schemes.2 Because excited-state lifetimes for transitions below 5 nm are generally in the femtosecond range, the x-ray lasers can benefit from the use of very short pump to achieve a population inversion.
