Abstract

Important DOD applications require high brightness sources in the thermal band from 4.5 μm-5.0 μm. To fill this need, we have explored direct emission on the 4I9/2→4I11/2 ansition in trivalent erbium.1 To avoid multphonon quenching of the mid-IR transition, we have investigated chloride host crystals that possess low energy phonon spectra.2,3
