Lifetime Measurements for a Potential Neodymium 5-μm Laser

Abstract

Utilization of low-phonon energy host materials, such as lanthanum trichloride (LaCl3), with rare earth doping has enabled laser transitions1 normally inactive due to multiphonon quenching. The longest reported wavelength from a rare earth laser, 7.2μm, was developed in our lab after introducing praseodymium into LaCl3.
