Abstract
The problem of 4-5 μm laser generation is the bypass of radiative transition by nonradiative one caused by multiphonon relaxation (MR). For the transitions with 2000-2500 cm−1 energy gaps multiphonon relaxation rates compete strongly with radiative decay rates, and for the widespread oxide and fluoride solid state laser matrixes with maximum energy phonon larger than 550 cm−1 the fluorescence is strongly quenched by multiphonon relaxation.
