Abstract
The vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) has emerged as a favorable alternative in the search of a low-cost and reliable laser source for high-speed data transmission in optical interconnects. For bitrates approaching 10 Gbit/s and beyond the intrinsic limitations will start to severely influence the output characteristics. Accurate numerical models that account for all relevant physical effects aid in the design for improved performance.
