Nonlinear Wave Mixing in Photonic Crystal Fibers

Abstract

Photonic crystal fibers have recently attracted a large amount of interest due to their ability to form supercontinua which can be used in i.e. metrology1 and optical coherence tomography.' In this paper we investigate the onset of supercontinuum formation for a 75 cm long photonic crystal pumped with femtosecond pulses. The inset in Fig. 1 shows a scanning electron micrograph of the fiber which is made from fused silica. The size of the core is ~1.7 μm and the surrounding airholes have a diameter of ~2.5 μm. The zero dispersion wavelength of the fiber is 660 ± 15 nm.
