Abstract

A coherent terahertz (THz) wave can be generated in nonlinear optical crystals by difference frequency generation (DFG). DFG has potentially wider tunability by selecting the DFG crystal and input wavelengths. The organic crystal 4- N, N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST)1 has a large nonlinear coefficient and a low dielectric constant,2 which is advantageous for phase-matching optical waves and THz waves. We have successfully grown DAST crystals as large as 20 × 20 × 2 mm3, using a slowly temperature lowering method.3 Continuously tunable THz-wave generation in the range of 0.2 to 1.5 THz was demonstrated with KTP optical parametric oscillator (OPO) near 1064 nm with a 1 mm thick DAST crystal.4
