Abstract

In recent wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems, wide band and high power amplifiers are being developed and components tolerating high optical power are in demand. Fiber tapering technique is an important method for fabricating these components such as pump/signal, signal/signal WDM couplers and pump multiplexers. Optical loss in these fiber taper devices depends on the waveguide and material characteristic1−2 to affect insertion loss and channel isolation. Increase of the OH absorption near 1.39 μm in silica fiber has been reported' at a high temperature over than 1300°C and annealing time greater than 10 hours. The induced loss would degrade performances of fiber devices such as Raman pump WDM for S band and Coarse WDM mux/demux.
