Generation of Amplified Picosecond Square Shaped Pulses in Ultraviolet Region for an RF Photocathode

Abstract

In recent years, photocathode RF gun is becoming widely used for generating lower emittance electron beams rather than thermo-ionic emission guns. The photocathode RF gun can generate shorter pulse length electron bunches since the employed laser pulses in the RF gun are very short, such as in picosecond or femtosecond region. Currently, people are using gaussian profile pulses with several picoseconds from frequency quadrupled Nd:YLF laser, however, according to recent researches, it is considered that a picosecond square shaped pulse is one of the best candidates for low emittance electron beam generation.1
