10 Gb/s Operation of Optical Preamplifier Using Inverted ASE Signal of Saturated Semiconductor Optical Amplifier

Abstract

Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are attractive for use in metro optical networks as well as in access networks. For cost reduction of SOAs, there remain difficulties such as severe requirements on anti-reflection (AR) coating at facets and coupling with single mode fibres at two ends. Also, a narrow-band optical filter is needed for use as a preamplifier.
