Efficient Visible Light Generation in a Femtosecond PPLN Optical Parametric Oscillator Using an Uneven Poling Duty Cycle

Abstract

Intracavity and extracavity second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum frequency generation (SFG) of pulses from an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in an additional nonlinear crystal are widely employed methods to generate visible pulses which are very useful for many spectroscopic applications. Problems are the required high pump power and the complex cavity geometry. These drawbacks can be strongly reduced by exploitation of quasi-phase-matching (QPM) techniques in periodically poled nonlinear crystals, e.g., LiNbO3 (PPLN) since simultaneous multiple higher-order QPM is attainable in the same crystal. However, only odd-order QPM processes1,2 have yielded efficient frequency conversion in the standard periodically poled crystals with 50% duty cycle.
