Abstract

We derive and validate an accurate expression for the Q-factor of an amplitude-shift-keyed optical fiber transmission system that accounts for effects due to partially polarized noise produced by polarization-dependent components. This expression holds for arbitrary pulse shape and receiver characteristics.
