The state-of-the-art broadly tunable cw and mode-locked diode-pumped chromium doped colquiriite, YAG, and chalcogenide lasers will be reviewed. The emphasis will be made on the new physics, connected with transition from traditional dielectric to semiconductor laser materials and with going further into infrared wavelength range.
