Abstract

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) increases the channel capacity of a fiber optic system by enabling a number of channels to be transmitted over a single fiber. It is therefore desirable to have a simple method for extracting and detecting signals without disturbing other channels in the fiber. We developed a GaInNAs(Sb) in-line photodetector on GaAs covering the 1.3–1.6µm wavelength range to enable measuring of the power traveling in an optical fiber without interrupting the continuous path of the optical beam.
