Harmonic and intermodulation distortion in single and multimode VCSELs

Abstract

A comprehensive numerical and experimental study of the harmonic and intermodulation distortion in VCSELs is presented. The distortion is strongly dependent on the modulation frequency due to the time scales involved for the different physical processes, such as spatial holeburning, gain compression, and relaxation oscillations.
