Independence of laser-induced damage threshold of glass on pulse duration for the femto-nanosecond region

Abstract

We show that the mechanism of the glass laser-induced damage involves a collective response of the dielectric, rather than the individual generation of electrons, and that modification of medium precedes the plasma formation under fs-pulses.
