A novel monolithic, passively Q-switched, diode side-pumped Nd: YAG laser is demonstrated, producing 3 ns 5 mJ pulses, up to 100 Hz. The saturable absorber (Cr4+: YAG) was optically contacted directly onto Nd: YAG slab.
