Abstract

A soft-decision channel-capacity for different fiber-optics communications channel-models is discussed. Short low-density parity-check codes of very-high code-rates, large minimum distance, low-complexity encoding and decoding approaching the Shannon’s limit within 0.7 dB at BER of 5x10-7 are presented, 2.5 dB better than turbo codes.
