Polarization-based identification of bulk contributions in surface nonlinear optics

Abstract

Bulk and surface contributions to the second-order nonlinearity of isotropic surfaces are unambiguously identified by polarization measurements. Measurements on an air-glass interface reveal that the bulk contributions dominate in transmission but are negligible in reflection.
