Symmetrically-Coupled SOAs Exhibit Optical Bistability

Abstract

An optical switch based-on two electrically coupled SOAs is demonstrated. Experiments show switching frequencies in MHz range with 4 dB contrast ratio. The performance can be improved up to GHz range employing photonic integrated devices.
