Abstract

Polarisation control of light emission from a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is a major issue to realise stable operation and to use these components in polarisation dependent applications. Recently, a polarisation control mechanism was proposed,1 based on incorporation of a birefringent dielectric/metal grating in the laser cavity. In this paper, we investigate the design of a purely dielectric grating as polarisation selective element (Fig. 1) and output coupler.
