Enhancement of optical nonlinear effect by using one dimensional photonic crystal structure

Abstract

Much interest has been devoted to photonic crystal structures since the formal similarity between Schroedinger equation for electrons and Maxwell equation for photons was clearly recognized. We can consider a photonic band gap and a photonic defect level for photons in a photonic crystal. It is expected that one can control the rate of spontaneous emission or enhance the effect of optical nonlinearity by three dimensional photonic crystal structures. But at present it is not easy to fabricate three dimensional pho tonic crystals with desired structures, since the control of the dielectric constant with the precision of the wavelength of light is very difficult.
