Abstract
Laser diodes with an electronically tunable wavelength are indispensible key components for advanced photonics applications. The physical concepts underlying the electronic wavelength tuning in laser diodes and the essential device structures are presented together with the relevant operation characteristics. Typical applications in communications, measurement and sensing are discussed.
