Abstract

Large refractive nonlinearity in a semiconductor quantum well1 would be applied to all-optical signal processing, such as self-routing in optical communication networks. However, much less study has been made on feasibility of the MQW in the 1.5-µm wavelength region.2,3 Here, we demonstrate for the first time all-optical switching operation of Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer with a nonlinear InGaAs/InAlAs MQW waveguide designed for 1.55 µm.
