Abstract
An integration of a spot-size transformer and a laser is most attractive for subscriber laser modules. Because this new approach will enable us a simple passive fiber alignment and reduce the number of expensive optical components. Recently we have demonstrated a narrow beam divergence tapered thickness spotsize transformer integrated BH MQW lasers.1 From the point of high volume production and low cost views, a ridge waveguide structure is preferable compared with a complicated BH structure. Here we report beam propagation analysis of tapered thickness and width spotsize transformers based on the ridge waveguide structure.
