Abstract
Peter Kaiser received the degree of Diplom Ingenieur from the Technical University Munich, Germany, in 1963, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 1965 and 1966. After joining Bell Laboratories in 1966, he contributed to early research in low-loss optical fibers and he was later responsible for the development of optical components for the first commercial single-mode lightwave systems. In 1983, he became Division Manager at Bellcore, with responsibility for research in optical components and multi-Gb/s, coherent, analog video and DWDM lightwave systems. His department was a key contributor to the DARPA-supported Optical Network Technology Consortium (ONTC) and Multiwavelength Optical Networking Programs (MONET) and made the first proposals for wavelength add-drop multiplexing and optical networks with "opaque” crossconnects. After retiring from Bellcore (now Telcordia) in January 1997, he became an independent Consultant and also prepared Optical Communication Technology Roadmaps for OIDA (Optoelectronic Industry Development Association) in 1998 and 1999. In June 2000, he joined Santee Photonics Laboratories as Chairman and Co-CEO.
