Abstract

In this paper, recent research development on realization of optical functions by controlling glass microstructures is briefly reviewed. Bi-doped glasses and transparent Ni2+-doped glass ceramics are introduced. The broadband infrared luminescence properties of these materials have been described. The luminescence mechanisms and their promising applications for broadband optical amplification and tunable lasers are discussed.
