Abstract
We investigated a whispering gallery mode cavity with a hexagonal cross-section using the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. We studied the dependence of Q on the curvature radius of the polygonal cavities and found two different modes; “perturbed-WGM” and “quasi-WGM”, of which the former exhibits the higher Q. We also fabricated a cavity by employing laser heated pedestal growth and demonstrated a high Q.
