Modeling of Period One Oscillations in Optically Injected Quantum Cascade Lasers

Abstract

This work theoretically studies the period-one (P1) oscillation dynamics of a quantum cascade laser subject to the optical injection. The P1 oscillation frequency increases continuously with the detuning frequency, while the oscillation power is enhanced by increasing the injection ratio. When the optical injection is operated close to the Hopf bifurcation, the frequency and the power variations of the P1 oscillation are different to those of interband semiconductor lasers. In addition, complex dynamics such as period two oscillations and chaos are not observed in the quantum cascade laser. This work paves the way for the generation of tunable mid-infrared photonic microwaves.
