Seeing a Single Atom Where It Is Not

Abstract

We demonstrate that spin-orbit coupling of light can lead to fundamental wavelength-scale errors in optical precision localization of sub-wavelength scale emitters using far-field optical imaging techniques. The effect occurs even for perfect, aberration-free imaging.
