Abstract

The Laser Data Relay Link (LDRL) program is directed toward applying optical communications to NASA’s wideband data transmission requirements through the 1980s. The first experimental deployment of LDRL-10.6 (using 10.6-µm wavelength) in space will be between a shuttle transmitting terminal and an elliptical orbit satellite or a ground receiving terminal. The subject of this paper is concerned with the optical design aspects of the laser transmitter and beacon receiver system for LDRL-10.6 space shuttle experiment.
