Direct observation of lattice motion driven by strong THz pulses

Abstract

We demonstrate that the soft-mode phonon in SrTiO3 can be driven efficiently by intense THz pulses and probe the resulting atomic displacement directly with ultrafast x-ray pulses on a sub-cycle time scale.
