Abstract

We propose and analyze, theoretically as well as experimentally, the SHG from a metallic dimer where the required symmetry-breaking is provided by the different material composition rather then its geometry. We show that in contrast to common wisdom the SHG in this case is stronger the more dipole-like the system becomes. It is proposed that this counterintuitive outcome results from the nonlinear interaction between the dimer constitutes, each behaving like a linear harmonic oscillator by its own. The dynamics of such system indicates the possibility of exceptionally strong SHG source as well as for higher harmonics, sub harmonics and even chaos.
