Nanometer Vibration Sensing by a Laser Pointer Used as a Self-mixing Interferometer

Abstract

Adding a plain photodiode to a commercial green laser pointer, we obtain a high resolution self-mixing interferometer, capable of detecting minute vibrations down to ≈4.4-nm (rms) resolution, or measuring displacements with half-wavelength (λ/2=266 nm) increments.
