Abstract

Orientation of liquid crystals under the action of the electric field of a laser beam has many things in common with the orientation phenomena induced by a low-frequency voltage. The latter has found presently many applications in electro-optics providing new display principles while several fundamental features of laser-induced orientational phenomena still has to be studied.
