Abstract

High-speed long haul fibre transmission systems have found considerable interest in low chirp sources operating in the 1.55 µm wavelength region. This is because intensity modulation is accompanied by wavelength chirp, which in conjunction with fibre dispersion causes a penalty in bit error characteristics. Integrated multiquantum well DFB lasers/electroabsorption modulators (EAM) have shown their potential as high-speed low chirp sources for fibre transmission systems. Details on design, fabrication, and highspeed system performance of such integrated sources for digital high-speed transmission are presented.
