Abstract
All recent proposals for transatlantic soliton communication systems have assumed digital ASK as the modulation format, with the result that their capacity is limited by Gordon-Haus noise and intersoliton interactions. In this paper it is argued theoretically that pulse-position modulation (PPM) can achieve high transatlantic capacities by coding for immunity against intersoliton interactions.
